- Having a relationship with the land and nature
A Wiccan knows that the land on which he or she resides, is a manifestation of the divine force that expanded and expressed itself in a physical manifestation with the purpose to expand and understand itself. It is the same force that expressed itself in humanity and because of this unifies everything, binding all things to each other through this force or energy. It binds me to you; you to your spouse, your children, your family. It binds each of us to our beloved pets, animals in the jungle, the plants in our gardens, the trees in the forest, the fire in our fireplace, the soil of the earth, the water of the ocean, the wind, the sky, the sun, the stars … all that we interact with and experience on the earth. Everything is unified, creating the great web of life, which allows the Wiccan to tap into that energetic web and influence it through focused intention. We are mindful of the influence we have over our natural environment and continuously work to in harmony with the natural ebb and flow of the rhythm of the earth.
We perceive the earth as a sentient being. We have known this for eternity though it took the general population until the 1960’s to catch up with what we already knew. The Gaia Hypothesis, formulated by James Lovelock, proposes that our planet functions as a single organism that maintains conditions necessary for its survival. We knew this. We understood that Gaia, Mother Nature, our planet Earth, is a living being just as we are and because of this, each thought, each word, each action we take affects us as well as Gaia, whether that is directly or indirectly through our interconnectedness by the web. We seek to cultivate and nurture our relationship with Mother Nature and we are able to do this most easily through direct physical contact with her body … the land beneath our feet.
