My friends rent the Hansen House, which is located on the corner of Crescent Avenue and Oriental Avenue. It is part of the property that St. John’s Episcopal Church owns. Along with the main house, there are two small cottages that also are part of the same property. The house has five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room, a dining room, kitchen and study. They also have a beautiful porch that wraps around half of the house a portion of which is screened so that the bugs aren’t a bother. Christian Hanson who was one of the first resident carpenters of Fisher’s Island built the house in the 1880’s. He was born in Denmark in 1847 and arrived on the island in 1878. He built the house for the Fox family who were the owners of the island at the time the house was built. He also built St. John Episcopal Church (1881), his own residence (1879) and many of the other cottages still found on the island. Christian Hanson died in 1915 and is buried in the Church cemetery.
