With Samhain behind me I have time to rest and consider all that I experienced up to this point in my life. I contemplate the situations and relationships I released and the situations and relationships I have gained. I consider how these shifts have changed the direction of my life and what it is I still desire for myself in the days ahead.
The Witch's Pyramid, a concept I hold near and dear to me, discusses the concept of rest and silence within the axiom "To Be Silent". Honestly I am certain that not only many a Witch, but also many a cowan forget what benefits silence can bring to a human psyche because many of the population is too busy obtaining possessions or chasing after opportunities or climbing the corporate ladder in order to reach some idea of success above them. We are constantly bombarded with other people's ideas of what it is we desire that often times we may not know what it is we truly want for ourselves.
Have you really taken the time to rest? What does rest look like to you? What does it feel like?
Rest is NOT sitting on your sofa watching Netflix. You are not resting in that moment. You are still doing something ... you're watching something. It may feel like inaction, but you are still engaged in something.
Rest is NOT sleeping with the TV on or while listening to music ... you may not be moving, but you are still doing something ... you're listening to noise.
How can you truly hear your own inner voice if you are listening or watching something else? How ca the Witch hear the voice of The Ancestors or The Ancient Ones when they whisper in his or her ear if you are engaged with something or someone else?
Rest is freedom from activity, it is a state of inactivity much like death, which is why we say things like, "Rest in peace." But we need not wait until our death to experience rest. Rest offers us many benefits that all human beings Witch or cowan should embrace. Yes, rest can be uncomfortable if we are used to the constant hectic pace of modern life, but I believe that it is beneficial for personal and spiritual growth. Rest allows those things (situations, feelings, beliefs, etc) that we are constantly running from to catch up with us. It allows those Shadows the opportunity to be known to us and for us to acknowledge and deal with them or to decide that we are going to continue to run from them.
Rest allows us the opportunity to take the time to heal our wounds, to contemplate our life experience, to see things in our reflection and in others, to hear our heart beat, to feel our emotions. Without movement we are still and while many may believe that stillness is empty and void of anything, I would disagree.
