Many new Witches misunderstand the concept of familiars. In discussing the concept with them it is clear to see that they believe that their familiar spirit is their animal companion whether it is their pet cat or dog or bird and that particular animal aids them with their magick or ritual, but the Witch's familiar is much more than a pet and typically their pet is not their familiar. While having an animal companion is pleasant and there are wonderful benefits for the Witch in owning a pet, to believe that your pet cat or dog is your familiar is misinformed and misguided. A Witch's familiar is not owned by the Witch. A familiar is a spiritual entity in its own right possessing freewill and a unique personality. They are spiritual entities with agendas that may or may not align with the Witch at any given time. The familiar chooses the Witch as much as the Witch chooses the familiar; the two cultivate a magickal relationship that is mutually beneficial to both parties involved in the bond.
A familiar spirit is a spiritual emissary of power that grants the Witch the ability to travel between the planes of existence while serving as his or her eyes and ears. The familiar is able to sense the presence of other spiritual entities and is able to recognize the subtle shifts in the energetic tides beyond the ability of a human being. When requested by the Witch, the familiar often will carry out his or her requests within the other realms. Familiars are known to assist the Witch with reaching altered states of consciousness as well as hiding her presence while they hold their Sabbat. Together the Witch and his familiar form a powerful team that has the ability to manifest great change.
While your household pet could be the vessel for your familiar spirit, it usually is not. Some familiars will possess the physical vessel of plants, trees, or other organic beings, but there are often times when the familiar is not and is held instead within an inanimate object like a doll, a statute or other item. While the familiar has the ability to possess an animal it does not hold a physical body of its own and will blend with the consciousness of the animal it possesses so that it may be held within your pet, but it is not your pet.

Once the connection between familiar and Witch is established the familiar will usually reveal its name enabling the energetic bond to occur and allowing each of them to absorb the knowledge and understanding the other has collected over their lifetimes; this will enable each of them to reach a higher level of consciousness.
